But it was more than this, the birds have just got there first. I don't really begrudge them, they had to suffer the winter as well; and I've had fun watching them forage and squabble amongst themselves over the choicest berries. The blackbirds must be sick of fresh fruit by now.
My strawberries did better but again I got there too late most days. The dog loves strawberries, and as she's first into the garden every day she gets the spoils. She's also fond of the wild ones that grow all over the garden and she'll go poking about for ages until she finds some. There are some gooseberries ripening in the front garden, I shall have to time it right with them!
Do you ever see something that stays with you long after the event? I don't necessarily mean something pleasant like a sunset or rainbow. No, the other day I was in the supermarket, perusing fat free yoghurt (not my favourite, but needs must) when an older lady- right in front of me- whipped out her false teeth and kept them in her hand as she did her shopping.
Don't get me wrong, I can imagine a badly fitting set could be like shoes that rub. But come on, where is the world going? Summer has been bad enough, with too many tattooed body parts on general display for my liking, but I don't want to have to worry about being bitten in the aisles as well...
