In the late summer, when we had the storms and wind, the best conker tree in town took a big hit. The cracking sound as the wood split could be heard for quite a distance.
This tree had stood for a very long time and was a bit of a local landmark. It has appeared on the blog previously in all its glory.
The part that had split away was sawn off and the other half left standing...
...until now. I really, really hope this had to be done. Although I'm sure it was for public concerns rather than there being a problem for the tree.
A weedy specimin of something or other ( I do hope it's a horse chestnut) has been planted about twenty feet away. Maybe in a couple of hundred years it will fill the gaping hole.
