Has anyone else noticed a large increase in the number of rooks this year? Each evening they flock over the house and the noise is incredible. They start off really high up and swirl lower and lower.
At least I think they're rooks, the jackdaws seem to still be on the rooftops when it's all happening. The squawking mass heads for a group of nearby trees each night, where they must have a roost, I pity the nearby houses. It's bad enough with the jackdaws on the road outside our house. One car used to be green, but the owner parks it under the same tree each night...
Now, I'm a great believer in live and let live (witness the starlings and their messy nest over the front door). But all these birds will have a lot of young, which in turn will require a lot of food, and I fear for the eggs of the smaller birds that haven't fared so well over the winter and really need a good breeding season.
Nature is a cruel and fickle madam.
