How many of us can remember what we were doing 17 years ago today, or 20 years ago?
I can. 20 years ago I was on the first day of my honeymoon. We flew to Paris, hired a car and drove to Amboise in the Loire Valley. We stayed at Le Choiseul:
We had a budget to work within for the trip, and as Mr H's work commitments were a priority even then, we only had five days. We blew the whole budget at this place.
We were so knackered by the time we got there we weren't in complete possession of our faculties. We sat down to dinner at maybe 9pm. Couldn't understand the menu (it was nouvelle cuisine gone mad) so ordered some wine, choosing a mid range bottle at £9. Remember this is 1989 so that's not cheap.
I enjoyed the beef medallions and the wine, but Mr H pronounced it a bit sweet for him so we left about a third of the bottle and went to bed.
Next morning at breakfast we got amazing service, even for France. Why? When we went to speak to the head waiter to ask him to explain the menu (we'd given up by then...) he mentioned the wine and our good taste... we took a sneaky look at the menu, and almost fainted. In our tiredness one of us, possibly not me, had read the price list incorrectly(it was 10 francs to the £ at that time). Add a zero. Ninety expletive quid. They must have thought we were the Rockerfellers.
Needless to say we lived frugally for the next four days, came home and Mr H started a new job, but same company. No allowances were made for our honeymoon!
So, yesterday was our 20th anniversary. Mr H bought me a Swarovski ring and a beautiful Russian box:
Which has a wedding scene on it. These are made of papier mache and layers of paint and varnish. This is especially well painted and I love it. He'd already had his present a little while ago.We also got a gift from my parents:
There I was thinking it'd be a bunch of flowers.
And 17 years ago I was recovering from the birth of No1 Daughter. Born on the day after our 3rd anniversary. I went into labour in the restaurant where we were having our celebratory meal (she was a week early), but she didn't make an appearance for another 16 hours or so.
We're not very good at planning...two birthdays and our anniversary in six days.
She's requested a Chinese take-away as her birthday meal. Chocolate cake to follow.
